The Evolution of the American Flag: A Historical Timeline
From the Continental Colors to the Stars and Stripes
The design of the United States flag has undergone numerous modifications throughout its history, with 26 official changes made since its inception in 1777.
A Symbol of Unity and Nationhood
The current design of the flag, featuring 50 white stars on a blue field and 13 alternating red and white stripes, has been in effect since July 4, 1960. This flag represents the unity and national identity of the United States of America.
Key Modifications Over Time
The original flag, known as the Continental Colors, had 13 red and white stripes and a Union Jack in the canton. As new states joined the Union, stars were added to the flag, leading to the 48-star flag that was in use from 1896 to 1959.
Official Regulations and Specifications
Until 1912, there were no official regulations governing the order or proportions of the stars on the flag. It was not until June 24, 1912, that an Executive Order standardized the design, ensuring consistency and uniformity in its display.
