Meet the Targaryen Princess Who Could Have Ruled Westeros

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen: A Life of Unfulfilled Potential

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, known as the "Queen Who Never Was," is a fascinating figure in the history of Westeros. As the daughter of Prince Aemon Targaryen and Lady Jocelyn Baratheon, she was a member of the Targaryen dynasty, the ruling house of the Seven Kingdoms.

Rhaenys was born during the reign of her uncle, King Aegon I Targaryen, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. She was a skilled rider of dragons and a capable warrior. However, despite her qualifications, she was passed over for the throne in favor of her younger brother, Jaehaerys I Targaryen.

The reasons for Rhaenys's exclusion from the line of succession are complex. Some historians believe that it was due to her gender. In Westerosi society, women were generally considered inferior to men, and there was no precedent for a female ruler.

Others believe that Rhaenys's father, Prince Aemon, was not considered to be a legitimate heir to the throne. Aemon was the son of Aegon I's younger brother, Prince Maegor Targaryen, who had been passed over for the throne after Aegon's death.

Whatever the reasons, Rhaenys's exclusion from the line of succession was a major disappointment for her and her supporters. She was known as the "Queen Who Never Was" and her story is a reminder of the challenges faced by women in Westerosi society.
